RecyclEarth Foundation efforts to reduce E-waste. Deccan Herald published this on 14/4/2022.
E-waste means electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part discarded as waste by the consumer or bulk consumer as well as rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment and repair processes.
Due to the lack of general awareness about E-waste, it is disposed in unscientific ways. The common ways to salvage material out of E-waste is to either burn it in the open or washing it with acid. These methods are harmful to the environment and to the living beings.
The Government of India has started taking a serious look towards the E-waste menace. The implementation of E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016 is a step towards addressing the damage done by E-waste.
RecyclEarth Foundation
RecyclEarth Foundation is in the process of applying for the PRO (Producer Responsibility Organization) license. It would enable the NGO to become a vital cog in the E-waste ecosystem and help in healing the environment.
RecyclEarth Foundation is a young organization. It has started its journey in December, 2021. In the first 100 days of operations, the organization was able to collect more than a ton of E-waste via voluntary donations.
It is heartening to see the public is responding to our call of disposing E-waste in an eco-friendly way. State/central pollution control board authorized recyclers get the collected E-waste and start processing it. The recyclers recycle the E-waste in a responsible way.
Recycling of E-waste results in several precious and semi-precious metals and non-metals being brought back in the economy. This entire exercise helps in promoting the concept of building a circular economy. Circular economy is a philosophy which aims at utilizing the resources in more than one iterations of a complete product lifecycle. The utilization can happen by sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling.
